Initial review of Thief's Legacy 2: Fun returns to fun, it's really a bit difficult

As one of the representatives of Roguelike games, the first generation Thief's Legacy enjoys a certain level of popularity in the industry. This work incorporates elements of randomness and emphasizes the theme of "inheritance". Players can continuously become stronger during the cycle of challenge and ultimately defeat the Maze Boss.

After many years, the sequel to the series, Thief's Legacy 2, has finally released its official version. The official has adopted the framework of the first generation game and added many new content. After more than 20 hours of preliminary gameplay, although I did not fully pass the level, I gained a general understanding of the game's content. As for the current evaluation, it can only be said to be "loving and hating".

Endless descendants

The process of Thief's Legacy 2 is not much different from its predecessor. The warrior played by the player must constantly adventure in a randomly generated maze, while searching for treasure chests along the way and engaging in battles with various monsters.

At the beginning of the game, the warriors we control will shine brightly. He raised his sword and shield high, walking with unrecognized steps towards the gloomy castle. Entering the castle, our protagonist charges towards the monsters in the corridor. After a series of entanglements, the warrior was successfully killed by a monster!

Do you want to rely on the initial hero to "pass all levels" in the game? Forget it, unless you have excellent skills, don't do it like that. Passing levels is the fate of the entire family. When the father sacrifices, his task will be inherited by the son; If the son fails, he will inherit it to his grandson. There is no limit to children and grandchildren, which is the correct way to open Thief's Legacy 2.

However, the heroes of their parents may not have expected that their descendants have peculiar personalities: narcissistic individuals who have problems with their intestines and are prone to diarrhea; The "blue blood syndrome" who is passionate about fantasy and sees everything with a touch of color; There are also dwarfism patients with pacifist ideals... Yes, you have to choose one of these normal or abnormal offspring to continue the adventure of your parents. As for the personality quirks of warriors, the game uses the term "trait" to describe them.

Different descendants of warriors have their own characteristics

For players, traits are still quite important. Some traits can give warriors double their health or increase their attack power in specific states when they appear, but others are outrageous. If the offspring you choose suffer from "upside down syndrome" or "one click death", then I advise you to start over as soon as possible.

In addition, Thief's Legacy 2 has also added a coin adjuster function, allowing some traits to earn more coins when passing levels. But after a game round, you may not enjoy this bonus. The reason is simple: before discovering the treasure chest, those descendants covered in diseases may have been killed by the monsters.

In addition to the traits mentioned earlier, younger generations will also have their own professions. In the early stages of the process, players can unlock identities such as Sagittarius, Berserker, Mage, etc. In the later stages, there are also various professions available. Different professions have different attack methods and talents, making it fun to play.

I personally enjoy being a warrior in the "chef" profession. Because chefs bring back their health talent, frying pan attacks can inflict both burning damage and rebound bullets. This profession has strong survival ability and simple operation, allowing new players to quickly get started.

"Chef" is really useful

The combination of traits and professions allows players to feel the joy of shaking people at any time, and the randomness of the system makes people addicted and unable to extricate themselves. In this game, you are a vegetarian shooter with emotional disorders, and in the next game, you become a dueler with a heroic complex. The children of warriors look so funny that it always makes people curious about what the next generation will look like. Unconsciously, the game duration followed suit.

Build a manor and navigate a maze

The estate can also be considered one of the characteristics of the early Thief's Legacy. This time, Thief's Legacy 2 also preserves the estate system for the warriors, allowing players to adventure more easily.

Explain to friends who are not familiar with it. In the world of Thief's Legacy, when the adventurer of his father unfortunately sacrifices, all the gold coins and some props he obtains can be inherited by future generations. After selecting the next generation of warriors, players can use their coins to expand the estate and unlock various upgrade options. The improvement of attributes, store facilities, and occupational openness are closely related to the expansion of the estate.

Manor has various upgrade options

As a set of ability growth systems, the expansion of the estate provides players of Thief's Legacy 2 with the motivation to "brush and brush". Future generations of warriors can use the legacy of their predecessors to strengthen their own strength. The threat level of monsters will also decrease, and players will have more and more areas to explore. It can be said that this two-way cycle of exploration and growth is enough to attract new players into the pit.

But from actual experience, I still feel that some upgrade projects on the estate are too expensive. Collecting hundreds of gold coins in one round of challenge is not a big deal, but later upgrades often require thousands of gold coins. I can't get that much money by brushing basic mazes, and it's easy to get killed by monsters by brushing advanced mazes. If possible, I hope the production team can lower the price of some upgrades in the future.

Since the previous paragraph mentioned the maze, why not expand on the discussion. The scenes in Thief's Legacy 2 are quite diverse, and each level has a specific scene theme, such as castles, streets, snow, and so on. It is worth mentioning that this new work has abandoned the original pixel style and instead adopted a hand drawn cartoon art style. Therefore, the visuals in this work are quite refreshing, and the expressive power of the scenes is also commendable.

In terms of map design, Thief's Legacy 2 has also added some interesting mechanisms. Players can use the lighting fixtures on the wall to perform spin jumps and can also quickly shuttle through the scene through small teleportation devices. Some puzzle solving scenes must use these mechanisms reasonably, so it is necessary to pay more attention when playing in practice.

By the way, the spin jump can play an important role in solving puzzles and battles. If you want to pass Thief's Legacy 2 as soon as possible, you must master this action proficiently.

The levels of Thief's Legacy 2 also incorporate randomized design. If the player does not ask the architect for help, the layout of the maze room will refresh at the beginning of each game round. This setting can also bring players a sense of freshness.

The main goal of the game is to challenge the bosses of each level, and to obtain specific abilities before opening the boss room. In order to acquire these special abilities, players must also complete certain challenges. But in this crucial challenge, the experience of this game seems indescribable.

Difficult, it's really difficult

In Thief's Legacy 2, the so-called key challenge is the "heirloom" level, which is a newly added challenge mechanism in the second generation. Obtaining the "heirloom" allows warriors to unlock actions such as double jump, echo kick, and aerial sprint, which are also required to use when kicking open the BOSS room door.

Of course, the production team will not give you a powerful "heirloom" for nothing. Before receiving the heirloom, players need to enter a dedicated room to complete the challenge. This kind of trial may sound fine, but when accepting the "heirloom" challenge, you need to be mentally prepared to fail many times.

For example, the "heirloom" challenges in the first few levels are mostly related to jumping ability, but in some scenarios, the jumping angle is very tricky and the judgment is very strict. Jumping lower will directly fall off the cliff, while jumping higher will be forced back by the system.

Some scenarios also require players to alternate between using a spin kick and a sprint, which requires a considerable amount of timing for the operation. If you can't achieve the literal meaning of "quick eyes and quick hands", then you can only stare at the chandelier.

So, although Thief's Legacy 2 has various RPG growth elements, it is still essentially an action game. I don't have any objections to the official design approach, but some demanding jumping challenges can be quite challenging. When I spent over forty minutes jumping over a narrow platform, what I felt was not the joy of success, but an indescribable entanglement.

After obtaining the "heirloom" through hard work, players can start challenging level bosses. Compared to the previous installment, the bosses in Thief's Legacy 2 have diverse forms and more magnificent movements. On the other hand, it is difficult for players to deal high damage to their bosses, and in most cases, they have to rely on the method of scraping to slowly kill their bosses. Although this is not a major issue, it also makes the entire boss strategy seem dull.

The boss in the snow area of is quite tricky

However, the authorities should have taken note of the relevant issues. In order to allow more players to enjoy the fun of Thief's Legacy 2, the production team adopted a simple and crude approach: adding an "official cheat tool", also known as "house rules.". If you really can't pass a certain scene, you can open the "House Regulations" interface in the settings and adjust the various values in the game on your own.

Players can freely modify enemy damage through the "house rules", making exploration easier. For the jumping problem mentioned earlier, players can also use "room rules" to give themselves flying ability, and then they can freely cross various platforms.

"House Planning" Interface

"Housing regulations" can indeed provide great convenience for players and help them pass the level smoothly. But I think changing values and abilities casually would actually compromise the fun of the game itself. Therefore, as of the completion of this article, I have not yet opened the "housing regulations" myself. However, the various challenges in the early stages of the game have already taken up a lot of my time. If the difficulty of subsequent challenges increases, perhaps I will let go of my reserve.

epilogue

Overall, Thief's Legacy 2 is a work of inheritance and evolution. It follows the content framework of the original Thief's Legacy and innovates the visuals based on it, enriching the content. The gameplay of this game is quite excellent, and friends who like Roguelike games can play with confidence.

However, there are still many details that need to be polished in this game, and there is room for improvement in the platform challenge and numerical design. If you are a handyman, it is inevitable that you will feel uncomfortable playing. So in the game Thief's Legacy 2, the top is really the top, and the difficulty is also really difficult. As for whether to buy or not, it depends on your own likes and dislikes.
